Charlotte Area Transit System will hold a public hearing Wednesday on its proposed fare increase.

The hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Room 267 of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center on East Fourth Street. The hearing is part of the Metropolitan Transit Commission meeting.

Transit system CEO Carolyn Flowers said fare policy recommends an increase every two years.

“CATS is proposing a 20-cent increase in local transit fare,” Flowers said. “This increase assists us in keeping pace with the cost of providing transit service.”

Fares on other CATS services also will be increased, according to the proposal. The last increase was in July 2012, and the new fares would go into effect July 1.

Anyone wishing to speak at the hearing must call 704-432-0872 or register at by 3 p.m. Wednesday.

These are the proposed rate increases:

Local: $2 to $2.20.

Light rail: $2 to $2.20

Express (within Mecklenburg): $2.75 to $3.

Express Plus (routes to other counties): $4 to $4.40.

Reverse Express Plus: $2 to $2.20.
