At least two large Lake Norman subdivisions in southern Iredell County remained under a boil-water advisory Monday, after someone broke into the office at The Point community on Brawley School Road and stole computer control equipment.

The early Sunday theft disrupted system operations, including water service to homes, an official with Carolina Water Service of North Carolina said. The utility has about 1,450 customers in that area, said Tom Oakley, the utility’s chief of staff.

Customers in The Point and The Farms communities told the Observer they’d temporarily lost water.

All customers have had water service since about 11 a.m. Sunday, but the system is under a precautionary boil-water advisory because of an interruption in minimum system pressures, Oakley said.

The advisory will be lifted when water test results come back, likely on Tuesday, Oakley said.

In two phone messages to each household on Sunday morning, the company said no problem was detected in the water. The state issued the advisory as a precaution, urging customers to “vigorously” boil water at least a minute before drinking it or cooking or washing dishes with it. Ice made from water that wasn’t boiled shouldn’t be used for drinking.

The utility received the first customer report of “no water” at 3 a.m. Sunday, and operations staff arrived on-site at 3:50 a.m. and discovered the break-in, Oakley said. Staff members quickly restored normal operations and called police, Oakley said. Police arrived at 5:45 a.m., he said.

Contractors installed new equipment that re-enabled the automatic control system, Oakley said.
