Saturday’s heavy rain and some not-so-healthy root systems are getting the blame for at least three large trees that fell on buildings over the weekend in Charlotte.
Rain also is cited as the culprit for a roof collapse at a bank Sunday afternoon in north Charlotte.
It is not clear if the weather also was to blame for a power pole that tumbled to the ground Sunday morning in Matthews.
No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
Nearly 3 inches of rain was reported from Friday evening until early Sunday at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, but the National Weather Service said more than 3.5 inches fell at some locations in the area.
The fallen trees were on Augusta Street in northwest Charlotte, on Tuckaseegee Road in west Charlotte, and on Irby Drive in the Myers Park neighborhood.
The roof collapse was at a Bank of America branch in the 8500 block of North Tryon Street.
Police say the Irby Drive tree incident was reported around noon Saturday. The tree landed on a vehicle and on an apartment attached to a garage.
Late Saturday afternoon, a tree fell onto an apartment building on Tuckaseegee Road. Five people living in the apartments were displaced.
About 1 p.m. Sunday, police reported part of the roof collapsed above the drive-thru area at the Bank of America branch on North Tryon Street. That is near Harris Boulevard.
Authorities attribute all those incidents – at least in part – to the rain.
It is not clear what caused a light pole to fall late Sunday morning on Sam Newell Road in Matthews. That happened near Matthews Township Parkway, and it forced the closure of Sam Newell Road for a few hours.
