A 4-year-old Rock Hill boy was hospitalized after police say his babysitter’s nephew tried strangling the boy with a piece of string last weekend.
Officers were sent to Piedmont Medical Center at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday after a woman, 26, reported that her son, 4, had been assaulted, according to a Rock Hill Police report. The boy’s mother said that while she works third shift, her roommate’s sister watches her children. The sister often brings her nephew, of whom she has custody, with her.
The mother estimated that her son had been attacked sometime between 7 and 11 p.m. Friday, the report states. She told officers that the babysitter walked into a room where the two boys were and saw her nephew, 9, on top of the victim, attempting to strangle him with a string. She separated the boys for the evening, but observed red marks on the victim’s neck.
The boy’s mother told police she did not learn of the assault until Saturday morning. She took her son to the hospital and called police.

The victim confirmed his mother’s story to police, who saw several red marks on the right side of the boy’s neck, the report states. Some of the marks began scabbing.
The boy’s mother said the state Department of Social Services was already investigating the suspect’s mother.
A police investigation continues.
