Smithfield, Publix and Richard Petty Motorsports teamed up Tuesday to donate 40,000 pounds of pork products to Second Harvest Food Bank as part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes tour. NASCAR legend Richard Petty was on hand for the donation, which will provide an estimated 160,000 servings of protein to Charlotte-area families. Food banks nationwide are reporting a significant increase in the number of people needing help due to the economy. Second Harvest distributed more than 40 million pounds of food and essential grocery items to almost 600 hunger agencies last year.
