A child being driven to school and two adults were seriously injured Friday morning in a head-on crash in front of a Gaston County elementary school, authorities said.
The collision was reported about 8:20 a.m. on Lewis Road, in front of Chapel Grove Elementary School. That is near Chapelwood Drive, about 3 miles southwest of Gastonia.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said a 36-year-old woman who had just dropped off a child at school was pulling onto Lewis Road and collided with another car. That vehicle was driven by a man who was taking his 9-year-old son to school.
Chris Stowe of Crowders Mountain Fire & Rescue said one person was pinned in each vehicle. He said it took a crew of 20 people about 40 minutes to free the trapped victims.
Stowe said all three victims suffered life-threatening injuries. The child was taken to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. Another victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and the third person was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
