Though the investigation is ongoing, the Thursday evening drowning death of a 20-month-old girl in Troutman appears to be accidental, officials said Friday.

Iredell County Sheriff’s deputies responded a call from a Sorrel Lane home around 7:45 p.m., said Detective Lieutenant Errin Jenkins.

Numerous adults and children were at the address. “There were some kids running in and out (of the home) with several adults on the property and in the house as well,” Jenkins said.

The adults outside thought all the children had gone indoors until someone came out and asked where the small child was, officials said.

The girl was found in a “small, blowup-style kids’ swimming pool with roughly a foot of water,” Jenkins said.

An autopsy was done early Friday morning and deputies will continue to investigate, Jenkins said. “But this appears to be an accidental drowning.”
