The ceremonial first pitch before the Charlotte Knights baseball game Friday night turned into a home run for a Charlotte family.
Philip Elmore, a gunner’s mate 1st Class with the U.S. Navy, caught the ball from his unsuspecting 8-year-old daughter, Isabella. He revealed himself to her when he took off his catcher’s mask.
It was the first time they had seen each other since October, according to the Knights.
Elmore, a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and Appalachian State, joined the Navy in 1986 and has been stationed in Sembach, Germany. He works with the Navy’s Warrior Transition Program, which helps sailors returning to the U.S. after serving in Afghanistan.
