Ryan Lochte calls Charlotte scratch ‘disappointing, definitely’

Ryan Lochte will not race in this week’s Charlotte Grand Prix meet due to ongoing pain in his left knee.

“It’s disappointing, definitely,” Lochte said in a statement obtained by the Observer. “I was really looking forward to swimming in Charlotte now that it’s my home, in front of all the SwimMAC fans. I still plan to be at the meet and will do my best to be a good host.”

Lochte’s participation the four-day meet first came in doubt early Tuesday after the U.S. Olympic committee sent a tweet to a fan saying that Lochte was no longer competing in Charlotte.

The meet runs from Thursday through Sunday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center uptown.

Lochte moved to Charlotte last fall to train with Marsh’s group of Olympic and professional swimmers.

But in November, he injured his left knee when an overeager teenage fan jumped into his arms, causing him to fall and strike his knee on a curb. Just over two weeks ago in a meet in Mesa, Ariz., Marsh pulled Lochte out of the meet after he competed in several events.
