Union County and Monroe leaders are offering a local window manufacturer incentives worth $326,400 to land the company’s $8 million expansion.
If the county wins the Windsor Windows project, the expansion is expected to create an additional 85 to 100 jobs over the next five years, according to Monroe Union County Economic Development. The company employs about 200 people in Monroe.
A decision is expected by late September, county officials said.
At a meeting Monday night, county commissioners approved an incentive grant not to exceed $160,000 over a five-year period. The Monroe City Council approved a similar grant not to exceed $166,400 at its Tuesday night meeting.
Windsor Windows, a subsidiary of Woodgrain Millwork of Fruitland, Idaho, makes windows and doors mainly for custom and luxury homes.
Its plant in northeast Monroe off of N.C. 200 covers 205,000 square feet. The parent company is considering adding 100,000 square feet to one of four sites in three states – North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia.
Chris Platé, executive director of the city/county economic development group, said he is confident Monroe will be one of the top choices for the company to consider. “We are doing all that we can to make it very competitive,” he said.
After the commissioners’ vote, Windsor Windows said in a statement it was encouraged by the support it has received from the county.
Windsor Windows has been in Monroe since 1992.
“Windsor is a key component of our economy, and we want to see them prosper,” Union County commissioners Chairman Frank Aikmus said in a statement.
