On Friday: Coca-Cola Speed Street race festival ... and a free breakfast

Racing activity Friday moves from Charlotte Motor Speedway to the nearby dirt track, and the Coca-Cola Speed Street will enter Day 2 of its three-day run in Charlotte’s uptown.

Racing activity Friday moves from Charlotte Motor Speedway to the nearby dirt track, and the Coca-Cola Speed Street will enter Day 2 of its three-day run in Charlotte’s uptown.

The race festival is open from noon to 11 p.m., offering live music, food and a host of other attractions.

Here are some NASCAR-themed activities Friday across the area:

Free breakfast at the Speedway: WBT will broadcast its “Charlotte Morning News” show from the plaza in front of Charlotte Motor Speedway, and they’re offering free breakfast. From 5 to 9 a.m., you can watch Bo Thompson and the rest of the morning crew. Breakfast offerings, according to WBT, are coffee, orange juice, funnel cake waffles, chocolate chip pancakes with bacon, or a baked potato with sausage, eggs and cheese.

Friday’s race festival entertainment: It’s a country music night, with South Carolina’s Zach Ludlam at 5:30 p.m., Tim Dugger at 8 p.m., and Thompson Square at 9:30 p.m. Thompson Square was named Duo of the Year in 2013 by the Academy of Country Music.

Test drive?: Race festival visitors can test-drive a Chevrolet from noon to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday in front of the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture on South Tryon Street.

Driver’s license expiring?: The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has a mobile unit operating from noon to 7 p.m. Friday on North Tryon Street at Third Street. At the booth, you can renew your license (if no written or road test is required) and get duplicate driver licenses or ID cards. Don’t forget to bring documentation, such as a Social Security card and proof of residency, for the ID cards.

Drivers at the festival: Joey Logano and Austin Dillon will make appearances from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. at the main stage Friday. Other scheduled driver appearances: (at Chevrolet stage) Michael Annett, noon; Kyle Larson, 2:30 p.m.; Jimmy Weller, 6:30 p.m. (at Creative Loafing booth); Michael Annett, 1-3 p.m.; NASCAR pit crew members, 6 p.m.; Ernie Irvan, Jared Irvan, Brennan Newberry, Jimmy Weller, Black Koch, Jamie Dick and Ross Chastain, 7 to 9 p.m.
