Police charged a van driver with misdemeanor death by vehicle in a collision that killed a motorcyclist on Wednesday at Pine Harbor and Rainbarrel roads in the Steel Creek area.
Kenneth Matthew Andrews, 31, died when his 2007 Yamaha motorcycle struck a 2000 Honda Odyssey van driven by Lanny Lee Jenkins, 66, police said.
Jenkins was traveling west on Pine Harbor Road, and Andrews was headed east on the road when the vehicles collided at about 4:30 p.m., police said.
Police said Jenkins told them he didn’t see any vehicles approaching as he began turning left off Pine Harbor onto Rainbarrel Road. As he made the turn, Jenkins told police, he saw the headlight of the Yamaha motorcycle approaching.
Police said Jenkins told them he was already committed in the turn when the motorcycle crashed into the rear passenger side door of the van.
Andrews applied the brakes heavily, leaving skid marks before the motorcycle went down on its right side and slid into the right rear passenger side door of the van, police said.
Andrews, who was wearing a helmet, also struck the side of the van. Andrews and the motorcycle then slid away from the van, and Andrews was separated from the motorcycle. Medic pronounced him dead at the scene.
Jenkins was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle for failing to yield right of way, police said.
