Federal officials were in Mint Hill on Wednesday, investigating the site where a worker was killed Tuesday evening in a trench collapse.

Authorities said James Mitcham, 46, of Wingate, died when the wall collapsed in a trench that he was working in. Mitcham was working for a Union County construction company, police said.

The incident was reported about 6:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Blackbird Hill Lane. That is in a neighborhood off Truelight Church Road, northeast of Wilgrove-Mint Hill Road.

Mint Hill police said the victim was in a trench at a house construction site when the wall collapsed. Neighbors said rescue workers told them the trench wall was 20 feet high.

The Occupational Safety Hazard Administration (OSHA) will investigate the incident.
