Charlotte Catholic High School, beset by controversy for much of the year, has hired an educator from the Triad as the new interim principal.
In a Tuesday letter to parents, faculty and students, Diocese of Charlotte Catholic Schools’ Superintendent Janice Ritter announced that Kurt Telford has been hired to be principal at CCHS for the 2014-2015 school year.
Telford is principal at Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Greensboro, which is also part of the Charlotte diocese. He has also been principal at two public high schools in Forsyth County and was named Winston-Salem-Forsyth County Principal of the Year in 2010-2011.
At CCHS, Telford will replace the popular Jerry Healy, who resigned last month amid still hazy questions of financial impropriety. He had been principal since 2003 and was placed on administrative leave in March while the diocese investigated possible mishandling of funds.
Healy, who has received strong support from many parents and alumni, did not address any allegations of financial wrongdoing in his resignation letter.
Ritter said the diocese plans to conduct a nationwide search in the coming year to find a “permanent principal.”
Telford is Catholic and has been a member of Holy Family parish in Clemmons.
Besides the controversy surrounding Healy’s exodus, the school made national news this year after a nun’s speech to students about homosexuality and single parenthood sparked petitions and letter-writing campaigns as well as an emotional meeting called by diocesan leaders that drew nearly 1,000 parents.
