The Rev. Clint Pressley, pastor of Charlotte’s Hickory Grove Baptist Church, is the new first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention – the largest Protestant denomination in the United States.

Pressley, 45, was elected, without opposition, last week in Baltimore, at the convention's annual gathering.

As first vice president, he will likely travel to speak to various Southern Baptist agencies, including the International Mission Board and the denomination’s six seminaries.

Pressley, whose Charlotte congregation totals about 5,000 each weekend, said the Southern Baptist Convention’s biggest challenge is “strengthening our doctrinal clarity” and battling for the main tenets of Christian orthodoxy. Tim Funk
