Starting Monday morning, portions of two Monroe streets will be closed for about a month for construction of a new water main.

City officials say the work will affect McIntyre and Polk streets between Steele Street and Jones Street. Crews will install a new water main to replace a cast-iron line nearing the end of its service life.

The new line is expected to improve the reliability of the water lines.

During the work, parts of McIntyre and Polk streets will have one lane of traffic closed and the remaining lane open only to local residents. A temporary above-ground line will be installed in the closed lane of the road to maintain water service for area residents, city officials said.
