Parts of three heavily traveled roads in the Charlotte area will be closed this weekend for construction.
The closures are the Catawba Avenue bridge over Interstate 77, Idlewild Road south of Independence Boulevard, and Hawthorne Lane in front of Presbyterian Hospital.
The Catawba Avenue closure lasts from midnight Friday until 8 a.m. Sunday, and crews will use that time to help convert the road to a diverging diamond interchange. That is part of a multimillion-dollar project to change the Catawba Avenue exit at I-77.
Motorists will be able to use the Exit 28 ramps but will only be able to make right turns at the top of the ramps onto Catawba Avenue.
Drivers who want to cross I-77 on Catawba Avenue will either get onto I-77 and turn around at Exit 25 in Huntersville, or use U.S. 21 and Westmoreland Road.
The Idlewild Road closure will be from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday, between Independence Boulevard and Monroe Road. Crews will be working on the Independence Boulevard widening project. Sharon Amity Road will serve as the detour for Idlewild Road motorists.
Hawthorne Lane will be closed between Elizabeth Avenue and East Fifth Street from 9 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Monday. This closure is because of the trolley line project. A more lengthy closure of Hawthorne Lane is scheduled from mid-July to mid-August.
Detour routes will be posted.
