The travel lanes on the outer loop of Interstate 485 in Matthews are open again, after being closed for several hours Tuesday afternoon because of a damaged overhead sign.
The sign was damaged Tuesday morning when the support pole was struck by a dump truck, authorities said. The N.C. Department of Transportation sent crews to repair the sign, and that forced authorities to close the travel lanes near Exit 52 (John Street).
Some motorists were able to get past the scene on the right shoulder, but others used a detour, exiting I-485 at John Street, crossing the road, and then re-entering the interstate on the other side.
The lanes were closed about 11:30 a.m. and reopened four hours later.
