The three-alarm fire that heavily damaged an apartment complex early Saturday near UNC Charlotte started on the patio of a unit, according to Charlotte fire investigators.
But Charlotte Fire Department officials still don’t know what started the blaze at the Edge Apartments, in the 9200 block of Campus Edge Circle, off John Kirk Drive. They say the investigation is continuing.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, which apparently broke out shortly before 2 a.m. Authorities said 48 residents and two pets were displaced. They said smoke alarms and a sprinkler system worked properly and helped residents escape safely.
The first firefighters to arrive found heavy flames and smoke coming from the top of the three-story building. They stretched several lines of hoses to the third floor and began battling the blaze. Meanwhile, other firefighters went door-to-door and made sure residents got out safely.
It took a crew of about 60 firefighters a little less than 50 minutes to subdue the blaze.
Damage was estimated at $560,000. Management at the apartment complex is working to find places to live for displaced residents. The American Red Cross provided help for victims on Saturday.
