A Mecklenburg County grand jury indicted Angelo Smith Jr. last week on a first-degree murder charge in the killing of his girlfriend, Bianca Tanner, according to documents made public Monday.

Smith, 30, was arrested shortly after Tanner’s body was found earlier this month in a wooded area in southwest Charlotte.

Tanner, 31, was reported missing 10 days after she moved to Charlotte from Greensboro, where she worked as a second-grade teacher.

She was trying to get a job with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Project LIFT, which seeks to improve education opportunities for students at West Charlotte High and its eight feeder schools.

Her 3-year-old son told investigators Smith had struck Tanner with a belt and “hurt Mommy in the face,” according to a search warrant. Family members attended a domestic violence vigil in her honor last week.

Smith told police he and Tanner argued on June 7 before she left their apartment on Druid Circle in north Charlotte, about 18 miles away from where Tanner’s body was found.
