A 50-year-old man was critically injured Friday when his moped hit a curb and crashed at North Main Street and a connector road that leads to Walmart, police said.

The single-vehicle wreck happened between 6 and 6:30 a.m., police said.

The man was wearing a novelty helmet not approved by the Department of Transportation, police said.

He was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

Initial reports that claimed the man had died from his injuries were incorrect, police said.

Police have identified the man but aren’t releasing his name until his family has been notified.
