Storm causes sewage spill in Monroe

About 8,700 gallons of sewage spilled into a branch of Richardson Creek during the storm, said city spokesman Peter Hovanec.

Officials in Monroe said Monday’s thunderstorms and torrential rainfall caused a sewage spill.

City spokesman Peter Hovanec said about 8,700 gallons of sewage spilled into a branch of Richardson Creek during the storm. The spill took place near Wolf Pond and Marvin Watkins roads, south of Monroe.

Hovanec said most of the spill was rainwater, not sewage. About 1.5 inches of rain fell during a storm Monday at the Monroe Airport, but heavier amounts were noted on National Weather Service radar south of Monroe.
