Motorists from the Ballantyne area and South Carolina who use Johnston Road to reach Interstate 485 could experience an easier trip Thursday morning.
The N.C. Department of Transportation said it will open the new “flyover” bridge from Johnston Road to the inner loop of I-485 in time for the morning commute.
The new bridge will allow motorists to access the outerbelt without having to wait at a traffic signal. Crews are scheduled to finish putting stripes on the road late Wednesday night, and then the bridge will be opened.
The bridge is part of the $83.3 million project to add a lane in each direction on I-485 between Interstate 77 and Rea Road. Work on the widening is expected to be completed in December, the DOT said.
