The big news Thursday for motorists was the opening of the new “flyover” bridge from Johnston Road to the inner loop of Interstate 485 in southern Mecklenburg County.

The bridge, which opened about 5 a.m., enables motorists headed toward Charlotte from the Ballantyne area and South Carolina to get on I-485 without stopping at a traffic signal on Johnston Road.

The bridge is part of the $83.3 million I-485 widening project, which is adding a lane in each direction between I-77 and Rea Road. That project is scheduled for completion in December. Steve Lyttle
