The Charlotte region can expect a reprieve from showers and thunderstorms Friday through Sunday, as mostly sunny skies and less mugginess will prevail.
At 5 p.m. Thursday, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Union County and lasted about 45 minutes.
Strong thunderstorms were soon reported in Catawba and Iredell counties, including at the N.C. 150 bridge on Lake Norman and heading east past Interstate 77 exits 35 and 36 in Mooresville and the Cornelius area.
At 6 p.m., severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Burke, Caldwell and Lincoln counties until 7 p.m. and more warnings soon followed for Cabarrus and other parts of the region.
No severe weather is expected this weekend, however.
Patchy fog across the area before 8 a.m. Friday will give way to sun and a high near 87. North to northeast winds of about 6 mph will become calm in the afternoon, according to the latest National Weather Service models.
Friday night should be partly cloudy, with a low around 70 and a light south wind.
Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 93 and a southwest wind of 3 to 7 mph, while Saturday night is expected to be partly cloudy with a low around 73.
Sunday also will be mostly sunny with a high near 93, while clouds will return Sunday night, with a low around 74.
Both Saturday and Sunday should be less humid than what we experienced during the week.
The chance of showers and thunderstorms returns on Monday, with the chance of precipitation at 40 percent during the day and 30 percent at night.
