A 26-year-old Statesville man has been arrested and charged with felony infant child abuse causing serious bodily injury, after a 2-month-old was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Iredell County sheriff’s investigators also charged Michael Dewayne Honaker with one count each of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
Honaker was in the Iredell County jail Friday under a $300,000 bond.
On July 17, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a 2-month-old was being treated at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville for possible child abuse. The infant was in respiratory distress and had possible head trauma, investigators said.
The infant was flown by helicopter to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, where doctors discovered the child had injuries consistent with having been shaken by someone.
The infant was originally listed in critical but stable condition, but has been upgraded to stable condition.
He will require lengthy medical treatment, although it’s too early to determine what, if any, long-term medical problems the child will have, investigators said.
