A Friday afternoon wreck involving two passenger vehicles and a Charlotte Area Transit System bus sent six people to local hospitals, according to Matthews police.

The collision occurred at a bus stop on eastbound Monroe Road, just beyond Gander Cove Lane, shortly before 3 p.m., officials said.

The CATS bus had stopped, as had a van behind it, police said.

The driver of a Nissan pulled up behind the van and tried to accelerate into the left lane to pass the stopped vehicles, said Tim Aycock, public information officer.

The driver of the Nissan failed to clear the van and collided with it, forcing the van into the bus, he said.

The driver of the van and three passengers from the bus where taken to Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, and two other passengers were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with possible neck injuries, police said.

None of the injuries were described as life-threatening.

The driver of the Nissan was not injured and no citations or charges were issued, Aycock said.
