Seven drum corps teams from around the country competed in front of a crowd of 8,000 on Sunday at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

The event was hosted by Drum Corps International, a nonprofit headquartered in Indianapolis that has organized youth drum and bugle corps since 1972. Members travel from all over the world to take part in competitions.

Sunday’s competition, called The NightBEAT Tour of Champions, featured performances by The Cadets of Allentown, Penn.; The Cavaliers of Rosemont, Ill.; Spirit of Atlanta of Atlanta; Santa Clara Vanguard of Santa Clara, Calif.; Blue Devils of Concord, Calif.; Phantom Regiment of Rockford, Ill.; and Carolina Crown of Fort Mill.

The Fort Mill team was named Drum Corps International’s “World Class” team in 2013.

“It’s a very different type of entertainment,” said Carolina Crown CEO Jim Coates. “It’s the pinnacle of the marching band world.”
