Welcome back, summer heat and humidity.

After last week’s surprisingly cool temperatures for this time of year in the Charlotte region, highs will hover in the mid-80s on Monday and Tuesday and reach 88 degrees on Wednesday and 87 on Thursday, according to the latest National Weather Service forecasts.

The chance of showers will be slight through Wednesday, before increasing to a 30 percent chance for precipitation on Thursday and Friday and 40 percent Friday night through Saturday night.

Temperatures are expected to dip again, however, to a high of 81 degrees on Friday and only 79 by Sunday.

Tropical Storm Bertha, which was beginning to move away from the southeastern Bahamas on its march north Sunday evening, is expected to stay well off the Carolinas coast. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

Bertha’s maximum sustained winds remained near 45 mph Sunday evening, with some strengthening expected through Tuesday. Joe Marusak
