Union Co. superintendent wins regional award

Union County schools Superintendent Mary Ellis has been named the 2014-15 Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Southwest Regional Education Service Alliance.

She is one of eight North Carolina superintendents to compete for the 2015 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year award. The winner will be announced in November.

Ellis has been superintendent of the district of 42,000 students since July 2012.

The district’s graduation rate in 2013 was 90.8 percent, the highest in the state for large districts.
