One person was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash late Thursday in Watauga County, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash took place on N.C. 194 near Howard’s Creek Road, in the Meat Camp community. That is about 5 miles northeast of Boone.

Troopers identified the victim as Shelly Easterday, 54, of Vilas. They said she was driving a Volkswagen Jetta that apparently went off the right side of the road and then veered back onto the road and into the path of a GMC pick-up truck driven by 47-year-old David Mason, also of Vilas.

Easterday died at the scene, and Mason was airlifted with life-threatening injuries to a hospital in Johnson City, Tenn., according to troopers. A passenger in Mason’s truck suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.
