The Saluda County Coroner has identified the man who drowned after the boat he was on sank in Lake Murray late Thursday.

Jose Milton Martinez, 31, from Charlotte, North Carolina, died from drowning, Coroner Keith Turner said.

Martinez drowned sometime around 10 p.m. when the jon boat he and two other men were on started taking on water and capsized, Turner said.

“They got into the boat with no life jackets,” Turner said. “Two of the men could swim, but he (Martinez) couldn’t.”

They tried to save him, but he was pulling them under, Turner said. So they got out of the water and called 911.

Turner also said the two-seater jon boat didn’t have a plug, which is why it took on water.

DNR divers and Newberry County Rescue made the recovery shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, according to Captain Robert McCullough, a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) spokesman.

The men were near Big Man’s Marina on the lake, McCullough said.
