The state’s opening of an additional eastbound lane of Catawba and West Catawba avenues at Interstate 77 Exit 28 has been delayed to Sept. 30, a Cornelius town official said Thursday.
The state hoped to open the lane next Wednesday but informed the town this week that general contractor Blythe Construction of Charlotte needs more time to finish pedestrian barrier walls, Cornelius Project Manager Tyler Beardsley said.
Catawba and West Catawba avenues have been down to a single lane this summer for construction of a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 28. The work has caused backups of 30 to 45 minutes to get over the interstate bridge, and nearby businesses have complained of lost trade.
An additional westbound lane is scheduled to open on Oct. 4, just a day late.
