Six people were injured, one seriously, in a multi-vehicle crash that blocked several lanes of Interstate 485 in north Charlotte on Saturday afternoon.
The wreck was reported about 2:30 p.m. on the inner loop of I-485 near the University City Boulevard interchange. The four wrecked vehicles came to rest near the median, and a lane on each side of I-485 was blocked.
The wreck took place as fans were headed to Charlotte Motor Speedway for Saturday night’s Bank of America 500. Traffic was snarled on the road for about 90 minutes.
Charlotte firefighters had to free one trapped motorist. Charlotte fire officials said it took a crew of 27 firefighters about 35 minutes to free the victim.
Medic reported taking one patient to Carolinas Medical Center by helicopter. That victim had life-threatening injuries, police said. Five others were treated by Medic and sent to Carolinas Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries.
