The closure of three blocks of Kings Drive for several weeks likely will have an impact on traffic near Central Piedmont Community College beginning Monday, school officials said.
Kings Drive was closed Saturday between Fourth and Seventh streets so crews can install tracks for the Charlotte Area Transit System streetcar line at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Kings Drive. The closure is expected to continue into November.
During the construction, only one inbound lane of Elizabeth Avenue will be open past the CPCC Central campus. And that lane is open only for handicapped students and vehicles dropping off students. Those motorists will be detoured off Elizabeth Avenue onto Pease Lane to give them access to the campus, and then onto northbound Kings Drive to Seventh Street.
“The construction project will force students and employees to plan accordingly,” CPCC said in a statement. “Getting in and out of Central Campus parking areas likely will take more time.”
In addition, officials said, the CATS bus stop near Central High and the Overcash Building on the CPCC Campus will be closed during the construction.
