Speed and alcohol were factors in an accident that killed two people on West Arrowood Road early Sunday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
About 4 a.m., a 1993 Jeep Cherokee driven by Billy Coby Blackwelder, 25, was traveling east on West Arrowood Road when it entered into a curve and drove off the left side of the roadway into the center median, police said.
Blackwelder overcorrected to the right and lost control of the vehicle, police said. The Jeep traveled across both eastbound lanes of travel and struck a large tree head-on on the right side of the roadway.
Blackwelder and Eric Francis Morris, 26, a passenger in the Jeep, were killed in the accident. Another passenger, Kathleen Copenhaver, 18, was injured. Medic took her to Carolinas Medical Center, where she was in critical condition, police said.
