One person died Tuesday morning in an overnight house fire that spread to other homes in China Grove, authorities said.
The blaze broke out shortly before 2 a.m. at a single-story house in the 600 block of South Main Street, according to China Grove police. Firefighters arrived to find the house engulfed in flames.
Authorities said the fire was so intense that it spread from the vinyl siding to at least two neighboring homes. Crews had to evacuate residents from those homes, but no injuries were reported among those residents.
Firefighters from a half-dozen departments across Rowan County battled the blaze. After it was brought under control, crews found the body of a woman inside the house. Her identity has not been released.
China Grove police said the blaze is being investigated by local authorities and by the SBI.
No injuries were reported among firefighters.
