Visitors to the Uwharrie National Forest in Montgomery County might see military activity Wednesday, but it will only be a drill.
About 600 members of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division will participate in a 20-mile march in the forest, as part of a training exercise. Military officials said the exercise will give troops a chance to train in an area that is different from their normal grounds in Cumberland County near Fayetteville.
Officials said the Uwharrie National Forest’s rugged trails and altitude changes will give troops practice dealing with arduous conditions.
While the paratroopers will wear combat uniforms, lugging equipment and carrying weapons, there will be no firing of live or blank ammunition, Army officials said. The exercise has been coordinated with law enforcement agencies throughout the region, according to military officials.
