The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the Monday murder of a Woodleaf man, using a tip supplied by the victim in the minutes before he died.
Deputies were dispatched to 5985 Foster Road in Woodleaf at about 2 a.m. to investigate a possible shooting. They arrived to find Dewey Ervin Gray, 54, lying in the driveway. He was able to tell deputies that he had been shot by someone nicknamed “Booker.”
EMS arrived and began treating Gray, who was transported to Baptist Hospital via helicopter. He died of his wounds will be treated, officials said.
Investigators identified the suspect “Booker” as James Leonard Stewart, 21, of 5075 Foster Road in Woodleaf. At present, Stewart is in custody and charged with murder. He is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond.
While conducting the investigation, deputies located several one pot meth labs at Stewart’s address. That investigation will be continuing, officials said.
