A Hickory man has been charged in a wreck that killed a volunteer firefighter in Iredell County on Saturday.
John Marlowe, 46, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failing to yield the right of way. He was driving the pickup truck that collided with a motorcycle operated by the crash victim – 51-year-old Jackie Cheeks, of Cleveland, N.C.
Marlowe was heading east on U.S. 64 at about 1 p.m. Saturday when he began turning left onto Swan Road, into the path of Cheeks’ westbound motorcycle, according to trooper Jonathan Barnes of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
“(Marlowe) says he didn’t see the motorcycle whatsoever,” Barnes said.
Cheeks was a volunteer with the Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department in Mocksville.
