Owners Jim and Renee Mitchell feature made-from-scratch pizzas and other homemade specialties at The Twisted Tomato eatery they opened in September on N C. 150 West.
Jim makes the pizza dough and Renee the sauce. He makes the Italian sausage for the restaurant's pizzas and subs, while Renee uses her homemade Tzatziki sauce on the gyros. She makes the Greek yogurt for her Tzatziki sauce as well.
The Twisted Tomato also serves hamburgers made of fresh ground chuck. They come with fresh, hand-cut fries.
The menu includes wraps, salads, chicken tenders, wings, calzones, hot dogs and various sandwiches and subs.
Never miss a local story.
Specialty subs include the Italian, with pepperoni, salami, green peppers, purple onion, olives, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese and Jim's Italian sausage on a toasted baguette bun.
The Twisted Tomato also has $4.95 daily lunch specials.
The couple moved from Idaho in June to be near family in the Lake Norman area.
Jim Mitchell managed a couple of restaurants and owned one in Idaho in the late '70s and early '80s before entering the construction trade.
"Twisted" comes from the name of a hair salon that Renee, a cosmetologist, once planned to open in Idaho with her sister-in-law. They planned to call it Twisted Sisters Hair Salon.
