The North Neighbors area produced some of North Carolina's top teams and players this season.
Our All-North Neighbors team highlights the best:
Coach of the Year: Paul Kikta, North Mecklenburg. The North Meck soccer team is used to winning big. From 2004 to 2007, the Vikings went 76-8-6 overall, including a remarkable 41-1 in ME-CA 7 Conference play, winning four conference titles and playing in two state championship games and one state semifinal.
But last season, the Vikings suffered through a 12-6-2 campaign, finishing second in conference play for the first time in five years. This season the Vikings started 0-2 in what proved to be a brutally tough I-Meck Conference.
But the Vikings (17-5-2 overall) recovered, winning 11 games in a row to win the conference title and reach the third round of the 4A playoffs.
Player of the Year: Angel Rebollar, Jay M. Robinson. As a freshman, Rebollar missed tryouts and didn't play soccer. He hasn't missed much since: The senior led his team in scoring this season and to a 20-3-1 record overall, including 14-0 in the South Piedmont conference.
Rebollar was voted to the all-state team and led the Bulldogs to the third round of the 3A playoffs before losing to Charlotte Catholic 1-0.
