A Davidson woman has been honored for a lifetime of service in behalf of women across the state.
June Kimmel recently received the 2009 Anne Mackie Award from Raleigh-based North Carolina Women United.
The coalition of groups works to achieve political, social and economic equality for women statewide.
For 21 years, Kimmel directed the Southwestern Region of the N.C. Council for Women, from 1984 through 2005.
Never miss a local story.
Kimmel focused on identifying and preventing domestic violence in local communities and has helped lead other initiatives to improve the lives of women and families, N.C. Women United officials said.
Kimmel's research spanned such issues as pay equity, sexual assault, sexual harassment, women's history, women and education, and women and politics. Kimmel also helped found N.C. Women United.
"She has been, and continues to be, a mentor and peer counselor to women of all ages across our great state," said Alison Kiser, president of N.C. Women United. "Her professionalism and passion for justice represents the best in leadership in North Carolina."
