Crews will begin replacing aging downtown water lines in January, a move that should also ensure better fire protection, city officials said.
Many of the lines were installed in the 1940s and 1950s as part of the old Cannon Mills complex, Public Works Director Wilmer Melton said.
City officials said they have taken precautions to make sure visitors can still find parking spaces and easily get to stores and restaurants:
The project is scheduled to progress block-by-block on only one side of the street at a time.
The city will install temporary signs as needed to help direct traffic and pedestrians during the construction.
The city will send weekly e-mail updates on the work beginning in January.

Commissioners to consider I-77 Exit 42 plan
STATESVILLE On Jan. 5 the Iredell County commissioners will consider approving a plan to manage expected growth at Interstate 77 Exit 42.
The Troutman-area exit is the next one north of traffic-clogged Exit 36 in Mooresville. The Exit 42 plan addresses everything from landscaping to spacing between driveways.
At their Dec. 8 meeting, the commissioners heard a report on the plan from Ron Smith, Iredell County's planning and development director.
The commissioners directed Smith to meet with a local developer who expressed concerns about the plan and to report back at their Jan. 5 meeting. That meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Iredell County Government Center, 200 S. Center St., in downtown Statesville.
Planning group names 2010 officers

Its transportation advisory committee consists of elected officials from those areas.
Lincoln County planner Andrew Bryant will serve as 2010 chair of the organization's technical coordinating committee and Iredell County planner Elinor Hiltz as vice chair. That committee consists of planners and managers from the member jurisdictions.
