The American Taekwondo Association of Huntersville and Lake Norman will host a free "Kidz 'n' Power" community event from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey Middle School in Cornelius. It will include an Abduction Prevention Seminar and Child Safety Open House, endorsed by AmberAlert.com.
The association believes all parents and children should attend the seminar together, because children of every, age, gender and race are vulnerable to abduction and exploitation.
Parents and kids will learn simple breakaway self-defense moves, ways to recognize possible stranger dangers, methods to deal with bullies and child-abduction safety tips. All who attend will receive child ID cards and fingerprinting kits.
Bailey Middle School's PTA also will present Partners in Prevention, including the Huntersville, Davidson and Cornelius parks and recreation departments, the DARE program, Solomon House, YMCA-Cornelius, Davidson Housing Coalition, Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Club, Ada Jenkins Center, the public library, Teen Health Connection, Exceptional Children Assistance Center, Gang of One, Parent University, Huntersville Presbyterian and the Huntersville Fire Department.
Never miss a local story.
Parents of students ages 10-19 can hear Natasha Marcus present "Speaking of Sex: How to Talk With Your Middle and High School Students."
A raffle will be conducted, and you must be present at the seminar to win gift cards for gas and groceries. Parent University also will present "How to Talk So Your Teens Will Listen, and Listen So Your Teens Will Talk."
Food will be available from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for $3, provided by Chick-fil-A at Northcross.
