To help promote their upcoming musical, "Violet," the Davidson Community Players are co-sponsoring a free showing of the movie "Boycott" at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at the newly opened Our Town Cinemas.
The theater is on Griffith Street in Davidson, in the Sadler Square Center. Call 704-892-7953 for reservations. Our Town Cinema will offer pizza (from The Brickhouse in Davidson), hot dogs, pretzels, soda, beer and wine for purchase.
"Boycott" is a historical narrative depicting the civil rights movement during the 1950s in Montgomery, Ala. "Violet," by Brian Crawley and Jeanine Tesori, is based on "The Ugliest Pilgrim," a short story by Doris Betts of Statesville.
"Violet" depicts a young girl's bus journey in 1964 from North Carolina to Oklahoma, where she meets a young black soldier who teaches her about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider.
Patrons who attend the "Boycott" screening will receive vouchers for discount tickets for the musical.
Performances of "Violet" are scheduled for 8 p.m. March 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27; 2 p.m. March 14, 21, 27 and 28 and 7 p.m. March 14 and 21 at the Armour Street Theatre. This adult-themed play is for ages 12 and older. Tickets are $15 to $18.
Summer drama experiences
The Davidson Community Player's Connie Company will offer a variety of summer drama camps for children ages 4-18. "Wild, Wooly and Wonderful" is this year's theme. Campers are grouped by age as they learn basic acting techniques and stage production. Camp fee is $80, including a snack. The schedule for nonaudition camps is as follows:
Ages 4-5: 9 a.m.-noon June 21-25, June 28-July 2 or July 26- 30, Aug. 2-6.
Ages 6-7: 9 a.m.-noon June 14-18 or July 19-23; 1-4 p.m. June 28-July 2 or July 26- 30.
Ages 8-10: 1-4 p.m. June 14-18 or July 19-23, June 21-25.
Ages 10-12: 9 a.m.-noon July 5-9 or 1-4 p.m. Aug. 2-6.
Two auditioned camps are also available. A two-week camp for ages 13-18 will be July 5-18, and a junior camp for ages 10-13 will be July 12-18. Both culminate in an original production to be presented in Cornelius, Davidson and Sherrill's Ford July 16-18. Interested actors must attend a screening audition Feb. 13 at either 11:30 or 1 p.m. at 307 Armour St. Davidson. The fee for the teen camp is $100; the junior camp is $80.

Davidson youth baseball registration will continue until March 1 for children up to age 17.
When Gene McEver hand-built the baseball fields on South Street in Davidson, he began a tradition that has affected thousands of lives for decades. This recreational-level sport helps develop a player's skills and understanding of team relationships in a fun, relaxed environment.
Skills Day is March 6 and 7; mandatory Field Day for families is March 20. Opening Day is March 27. Season tournaments will be June 1-10.

Winter Tailgate Market
The Davidson Farmer's Market, beside the Town Hall, will host the Winter Tailgate Market from 9 a.m. to noon every other Saturday through mid-April (Feb. 20, March 6 and 20, April 3 and 17). Farmers will sell winter and early spring produce, such as tender lettuces, root vegetables, hearty greens, pastured meats and cheeses, freshly baked breads, cakes, pies and prepared dishes.
