Charlotte Motor Speedway is partnering with regional tourism bureaus and area hotel operators to secure lower room rates for race fans attending the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on May 22 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 30.
About 50 hotels within an hour of the 1.5-mile superspeedway have agreed to reduce their race week room rates by 15 percent and waive minimum stay requirements, said Marcus Smith, the speedway's president and general manager.

Hollywood costume designer Shawnelle Cherry recently opened Future Fashion Designers, a sewing and fashion school, at 123 N. Main St.
Cherry, who lives in Mooresville and Los Angeles, is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles and the UCLA extension program, where she studied costume design.
She worked in the Los Angeles garment industry early in her career. Then she opened a design studio in Pacific Palisades, Calif., where she designed bridal and evening gowns to be worn to awards ceremonies including the Oscars, Emmys and Daytime Emmys, as well as celebrity clients. Since 1996, she has also designed costumes for feature films.
Future Fashion Designers is enrolling new students for its spring session, which starts March 8. Students of all ages and skill levels will learn the art of fashion design, seeing their ideas take form from sketch to sewing machine.
Kimberlee Turley has joined Future Fashion Designers as an instructor. She is a 2005 fashion design graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco. She has sewn since age 8, and she specializes in custom sewing patterns and computer aided design.

Ollie's Bargain Outlet plans to open in April in the former Goody's space in the Consumer Square shopping center at Interstate 77 Exit 36.
Ollie's operates about 80 stores in eight Mid-Atlantic states, including one in Hickory.
The stores sell closeout, surplus and salvage merchandise, including brand names in every department, such as housewares from Rubbermaid, Mirro, Ekco and Anchor Hocking, toys from Mattel and sporting goods from Igloo.
Ollie's stores are open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.
