Davidson Elementary School's fifth annual Artfest will display more than 1,000 pieces of artwork 6-8:15 p.m. Tuesday in hallways throughout the building. The artwork is created by students at every grade level.
Awards will be given to several students for two- and three-dimensional artworks and for photography.
Artfest also will have 43 ceramic pots designed by students and made by master potter and Davidson Elementary art teacher Lynn Andrus.
It's an educational fundraiser, Andrus said: "I am undertaking a huge project by making a pot with each class. Many students have never seen a master potter at work, and there is much to share with them."
Never miss a local story.
Andrus has been teaching at Davidson Elementary for 22 years, has her own pottery studio, Andrus Stoneware, and sells functional artistic pottery. Years ago my children and I attended one of her numerous summer camps and made cereal bowls that we still eat out of daily. Call her at 704-892-8527 or visit www.andrusstoneware.com.
Besides the sale of clay pots, a silent auction will offer 40 themed gift baskets, such as Everything Chocolate, Farmers' Market Breakfast, Wildcats on Main, Family Fun Trunk and more. Bidding will be 6-7:30 p.m. Auction proceeds support PTA projects. The school's honor chorus will perform at 7 p.m. in the gym.
Artfest celebrates National Youth Art Month, an annual observance to emphasize the value of art and art education and to encourage public support for quality school art programs.
