Chorus wins superior: The Central Cabarrus Advanced Chorus earned a superior rating at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Large Group Contest on March 15. The chorus competed in Level VI (the most difficult) singing "O Magnum Mysterium" by Victoria in Latin and "Erschallet ihr Lieder" by J.S. Bach in German. The 50-voice chorus under the direction of Dennis Jewett scored superior ratings from all three judges. On March 16, the chorus was the guest choir on the Carolina Concert Association "Bach to the Future" concert at the Haltom Theatre in Charlotte. They joined the Ethos Consortium choir and orchestra on music of Bach and the Beatles.
Mount Pleasant High
Student ambassador to Japan: Sophomore Louise Walker was nominated by a teacher to go to Japan with the People to People organization, which is a student ambassador program. Before the trip, she will study the history, government and culture of Japan and develop civic awareness and communication skills that will prepare her to be a student ambassador. Walker will be in Japan from June 20 to July 3 with 40 students from the area. They will visit the Imperial Palace Plaza, Mount Fuji, Tokyo and stay with local families during the trip. Part of the cultural experience will include participating in a tea ceremony, studying ancient farming traditions and getting special insights into Buddhist and Shinto temples. People to People was established in 1956 by president Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote world peace through increased understanding between the citizens of the world. Walker is selling raffles tickets as well as car wash tickets and organizing a yard sale with her grandmother to cover travel expenses. Kindergarten registration: Kindergarten registration for the 2010-2011 school year will be held April 19-23 at all CCS elementary schools. Children who are 5 years old on or before August 31, 2010, are eligible to register for kindergarten. Registration will be at the school located in your child's attendance area. If a language other than English is spoken in the home or if your child was born outside of the United States, visit the Welcome Center located at the Glenn Center, 120 Marsh Avenue, Concord, 704-723-9137, to register your child. Saturday academy: The school will hold Saturday Academy sessions in April for students and parents. The parent sessions will be April 21.
