Now that spring has brought warmer weather to the Carolinas, outdoor activities are enjoyable again, and the Harrisburg branch of the Cannon Memorial YMCA is helping organize three events to give residents the opportunity to enjoy themselves.
"We are always looking for ways to provide new services and programs that bring value to the lives of those in our community," said Brent Rockett, managing director of the Harrisburg branch. Rockett also said partnering with similar charitable organizations creates relationships and the necessary strength to accomplish the goals of each organization.
An example of this strength will be demonstrated April 17, when the Harrisburg YMCA partners with Southwest Cabarrus Rotary Club and Venue Church of Harrisburg for two community events.
The first, the Harrisburg 5k, will begin at 8 a.m. outside Town Hall. The 5k community run is organized by Mandie Condie, group exercise coordinator and event planner for the Harrisburg Y. The idea originated three years ago, when Condie and a friend from the Rotary Club discovered both organizations wanted to do a 5k. Now in its third year, Condie expects more than 200 runners to participate.
The event is co-sponsored by the Cabarrus Rotary Club, which provides volunteers for setup, registration, timing and the awards ceremony. The funds raised benefit both organizations.
For the YMCA, all proceeds will support the "Change of Life Campaign," part of the organization's program that offers scholarships to residents who want membership and quality child care but can't otherwise afford it.
The second event, the Family Fun Run, will begin at 9 a.m. in the same location, allowing children and adults to participate together.
The awards ceremony will follow the two runs.
The 5k registration is $20 if registering before April 16 and $25 the day of the race. For the 1-mile Fun Run, the cost is $10 for registration before April 16 and $12 the day of the event. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. April 17.
For more information on either run, contact Condie at email@example.com or call 704-454-7800.
Following the two runs will be a free Healthy Kids Day event, a national program of the YMCA held on the same day throughout the country. The event presents many vendors and service organizations who promote healthy practices and habits.
Health Kids Day is sponsored by Venue Church, which will provide free food, drinks, games and volunteers to serve the community. Some of the fun will include a D.J, bounce house, dance presentations, a visit from the Harrisburg Fire Department, craft stations and more.
The Venue Church meets every Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Harrisburg YMCA.
Pastor Jonathan Huffman said the church would rather partner with the Harrisburg community than compete.
"Rather than asking the residents of Harrisburg to come to what we are doing, we'll be glad to join what they are doing," Huffman said.
